In 2015, the last time the Open Championship was held in St. Andrews, Jason Day and Rickie Fowler enjoyed one of the best golf courses of their careers. Day finished tied for second at the Old Course that summer, then won the PGA at Whistling Straits the following month. Fowler had won The Players in May and then claimed Deutsche Bank in the FedEx Cup Qualifiers.
Fast forward to 2022 and neither Day nor Fowler were on the court at last week’s Open, both sitting at No. 143 and No. 149 in the world respectively, as they each continue to search for each other. For Fowler, it was the fifth major tournament he hasn’t played in the last eight. For Day, it was the fourth he had missed during the same period.
This week, both players are on the court at the 3M Open in Minnesota, and both are in what you might consider “long-term” territory. Seven years is a long time, but it’s still quite shocking to see how far they’ve fallen. Day (55-1, DraftKings) and Fowler (65-1, DraftKings) each have longer odds than Mark Hubbard (35-1), Adam Svensson (45-1), Nick Hardy (45-1) and Chris Gotterup (50-1), a combined quartet for 0 PGA Tour wins against Fowler and Day’s combined 17.
Topping the odds table you’ll find Tony Finau (11-1) as the solo favorite, with Sungjae Im (16-1), Maverick McNealy (18-1) and Hideki Matsuyama (18-1) close behind. Chez Reavie, fresh off a victory in the Barracuda Championship, is 35-1.
Below are the consensus odds for each player in the 3M Open field:
