A TikToker Shared How Real A Scene About Canada From ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Is For Him

A TikToker made a comparison between a scene of The Handmaid’s Tale and his own experience as a refugee in Canada and it’s quite interesting.

Semion, who is from Ukraine and runs the @newcanadians account, showed a clip from the show where Moira, played by Samira Wiley, arrives in Canada after the hellish experience of being trapped in Gilead.

“Why are you so good, Canada? Thank you! Such a great show,” he captioned his post.

In the clip, Moira is seated at a table with a Canadian official and a Canadian flag in the background.

“So welcome to Ontario,” the man said to Moira as she looked rather confused. “I wish it was under different circumstances, but we’re glad to have you here.”

“Thank you,” Moira said, as Semion laughed and said he felt like her.

“Do you have family in Canada?” continued the official. “We have an alert system. It will text you if someone on your list comes in.”

Moira then stated that she had no family in the country.

“So I become your best friend,” the official replied. “So there’s a lot to go through, but I’ll guide you.”

At this point, Semion laughed again and said Moira’s experience was similar to her own family’s when they stayed with a host family in Ontario after moving from Ukraine.

“This way,” the official said. “Here’s your refugee ID card. I’m your interim. A permanent social worker will be assigned to you in the next few days. At some point…you may be transferred to another refugee program elsewhere in Canada, or even to another country.”

Semion turned the camera to face him.

“Thank you, Canada. Thank you,” Semion said before returning the camera to the show where Moira was given life necessities from the official like a cellphone, $200 for taxis and $470 in cash.

“Canada is just Canada, even on Amazon shows,” Semion said.

“Like Canada helps everyone, even on the shows,” said Semion’s wife.

In the comments section, people commented on how powerful the scene was.

“I haven’t watched the show in a while but this scene has me bawling!” wrote one person.

“Canada is an absolutely wonderful country! We’re not perfect – anywhere – but I’m very happy to be Canadian!” said another.

“So touching,” one person shared. “We can never be your homeland, but we will do our best to make it that way.”

Glad you found Canada so welcoming, Semion!
