AIG Women’s Open – Everything you need to know for week at Muirfield

Just like in the men’s game, the AIG Women’s Open is the last major championship of the year and it will be hosted by Muirfield in East Lothian.

Until 2017, Muirfield was a men’s only club and they came from the Men’s Open Championship rotation. After the initial ballot failed to find the two-thirds majority needed to allow female members, Muirfield reversed that decision on a second ballot.

The famous links has hosted the Open Championship 16 times, most recently in 2013 when Phil Mickelson won his first and only Claret Jug and his fifth major title.

Muirfield has been blessed with an enormous depth of talent at the AIG Women’s Open in 2022. 11 former champions are playing this week, such as Georgia Hall, Laura Davies and Catriona Matthew.

18 players among the 20 best in the world are in competition and 14 of these players already have major trophies to their name. Additionally, clear pathways have been forged by the R&A for a host of top amateur golfers to play for the Claret Jug.
