Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still reigns supreme. The Marvel sequel passed the $550 million mark at the worldwide box office in nine days, Disney announced on Friday.

The Sam Raimi-directed Benedict Cumberbatch film will once again hit the box office this weekend, where it has no serious competition in theaters. The only other notable new release is Zac Efron’s Firestarter, Universal’s remake of the Stephen King novel, which failed to generate much positive reviews. It earned $375,000 from Thursday previews and is also available to stream on Peacock.

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Thursday grossed $19.2 million worldwide, including $7.7 million domestically – less than last Thursday, with a preview total of $36 million. Its total worldwide box office is currently $551.6 million.

Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness debuted with a staggering $185 million last weekend, becoming the 11th biggest opening in the country of all time and the biggest launch of 2022. It was also the second biggest opening of the pandemic era after last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which set the stage for a supernatural, cross-verse adventure in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns in the sequel and is joined by Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, after she caused magical trouble in the Disney+ series WandaVision. Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor reprise their roles from the original Doctor Strange, while newcomer Xochitl Gomez appears in the sequel as America’s young hero Chavez. When America, which has the ability to traverse the infinite dimensions of the Marvel multiverse, finds itself in our world, Doctor Strange must protect it from a host of magical and terrifying monsters, preventing reality from falling apart.

Without a lot of new releases, Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness is expected to maintain its box office success and plenty of theater showings. Over 60 screenings of Doctor Strange 2 in a single day at one of New York’s AMC theaters this past weekend is a testament to just how strong Marvel’s stranglehold on theatergoers and theater owners is.
