South Korean Joohyung Kim, who goes by the name Tom, a nickname he was given as a child after the cartoon Thomas the Train – “I had everything [Thomas the Train] thing, I had the lunchbox, I had the toys, yeah,” – carded rounds 67-64 to head into the weekend at 9-under 131.

He’s tied for the lead despite opening the tournament with a quadruple bogey eight, the worst start of his career. He became the third player in the ShotLink era (est. 2003) to quadruple bogey or worse on the first hole of a round and go on to score under par.

“I was laughing,” he said. “There was nothing I could do. It was just the first hole and damn it I just had a really bad lie and then I didn’t really get another good lie and I didn’t really get another good lie I didn’t not really had another good lie. It turned out not bad.

Kim, 20, rallied with seven birdies to shoot 3-under at 67.

“I just stayed very patient there. I knew there were birdies there. Once I got some momentum I kept pushing and I think that’s how seven birdies came out,” he said. “It was a bad hole and I just thought, you know what, I can still get it, I can still shoot under par today and somehow I got it. do.”

On Friday, Kim made seven more birdies and just one bogey en route to shooting 64. When he entered the bunker on the first hole – his 10e of the day – he was like, “Well, here we are, don’t ride a quad.”

He did par. “So most got better on the No. 1 hole,” he cracked.

Kim lost her mind this week. He made 301 feet, 1 inches of putts, scoring the most in the first two rounds since the Wyndham Championship moved to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008. He earned 9.2 strokes on the greens, the most SG: Putting in consecutive rounds (in the same event) this season.

“If you had told me after the first hole yesterday where I would be after two days, I definitely would have taken it, so very happy,” Kim said.
