Hollywood heavyweight Zac Efron to star in film about cursed Texas wrestling dynasty

Hollywood heavyweight Zac Efron has been tapped to star in A24’s latest film about the famous Texas wrestling family, the Von Erichs. Deadline reported the news that Efron will be starring in the production company’s new drama, The Iron Claw, directed by writer-director Sean Durkin.

The film tells the true story of the Von Erich family’s dynasty of professional wrestlers that has shaped the sport from the 1960s to the present day. In 2009, the Von Erich family was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a group.

Hailing from the Dallas area, Von Erich’s saga is laced with rumors of a family curse, multiple wrestling titles, and a string of suicides and tragic deaths. Notably when family patriarch Fritz Von Erich died at his Denton County home in 1997 at the age of 68, five of his six sons had already preceded him in death.

It’s unclear which muscular member of the Von Erich Efron family will be playing, as no further details have been released at this time, but getting in shape for the role shouldn’t be a problem. Efron made headlines for his muscular physique in Baywatchin which he co-starred with former wrestler Dwayne Johnson.

News of Efron’s involvement with A24 follows news that the actor will also star alongside Nicole Kidman and Joey King in an upcoming Netflix comedy, Behind the candelabra. Efron is also set to appear in Pete Farrelly’s long-awaited Oscar-winning sequel. green book, called The The greatest beer race of all time, which will be broadcast on Apple TV.

Durkin has already garnered attention with his escape movie, Martha Marcy May Marlenewhich won him the best director award at Sundance in 2011. His second film, The nest, premiered at Sundance in 2020. His next project A24 places him in the company of “indie darling” songwriters like the Safdie Brothers, Ari Aster and Barry Jenkins.
