Man Utd signing 28 y/o forward after Weghorst 'not ruled out' at Old Trafford – GIVEMESPORT

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag moving for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay in this window wouldn’t be a surprise, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has told GiveMeSport.
The Red Devils are in the hunt for additions this window and Depay’s name has been mentioned in the discussion as Ten Hag eyes more offensive options.
Last week Sport revealed that Manchester United were one of the Premier League clubs interested in the 28-year-old, with growing urgency at the club to replace the departed Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sport has also reported in recent times that Manchester United would be Depay’s preferred destination if he was to leave the Camp Nou this window.
Of course, Depay is a former United player and played at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017, though could only muster seven goals in 53 appearances in a largely underwhelming spell at the club, as per Transfermarkt.
This window, The Daily Mail cite that Manchester United are closing in on a move for his countryman Wout Weghorst, emphasising their desire to bring in another focal point in attack for the second half of the campaign.
Journalist Alex Crook believes that although Depay possibly wouldn’t be a signing that captured the imagination at Old Trafford, he ‘wouldn’t rule it out’ in light of their search for a frontman.
Speaking to GMS, Crook said: “I don’t think he’s one that’s going get the fans excited. But yeah, if a deal could be done I wouldn’t rule it out.”
Even taking into account his underwhelming first spell in Manchester, Depay is someone who has matured as a player and could bring something different to the table for the Red Devils.
His game time has been severely limited at Barcelona this season, with the former Lyon man making just four appearances in all competitions scoring once, Transfermarkt has shown.
Despite this, he did enjoy a productive World Cup for the Netherlands, getting on the scoresheet against the United States in the Round of 16 and playing a leading role in their run to the quarter-final stage.
Waiting until the summer may be a better option for Ten Hag if Depay remains of interest, given that he will be available on a free transfer at the end of 2022/23.
His wages may prove to be a stumbling block, however, as Salary Sport reports him to be on £159k-a-week at Barcelona currently and would likely demand a hefty pay packet to make a move.
