It’s easy to set fitness resolutions. But to achieve your goals, you need a game plan that you’ll stick to. That means finding a workout you enjoy.
We asked experts to share new and unexpected workouts that are fun and effective to help accomplish some of the most popular fitness resolutions.
Resolution #1: Lose Weight, but Go Easy on the Knees
Running isn’t for everyone, especially if you suffer from knee pain.
Marc Santa Maria, ​​national director of group fitness for Crunch Signature, suggests trying boxing-style workouts that involve a punching bag or shadowboxing.
Jon Salzman, a physical therapist at Mayo Clinic Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Minneapolis, recommends rowing. The rowing machine, or erg, often gets overlooked in the gym because it requires proper technique to ensure safe and efficient performance.
Resolution #2: Improve Coordination and Agility
Cardio and strength get all of the attention at the gym, but pro athletes focus on improving coordination and agility, and you should, too.
A number of new products for the home gym can help gamify coordination and agility. Danny King, a master trainer with Life Time health clubs, is a fan of BlazePod, which many pro sports teams use for training. The reaction-training discs can be placed on the floor or stuck onto a wall. Tap a disc with your hand or foot when it lights up.
Resolution #3: Gain Core Strength
Don’t worry; sit-ups aren’t the only way to build a stronger core.
Alexis Sweeney, a group fitness instructor at Equinox, suggests trying a workout like barre class or mat- or machine-based Pilates.
If your old routine feels easy, core-focused suspension training equipment can make the same exercises feel tough again, Mr. Santa Maria says.
Resolution #4: Improve Cardio Fitness
If you get bored from the monotony of running, walking and cycling, try mixing them all up.
“Mixed-modality intervals is a fun new workout trend we’re seeing which uses lots of different equipment, like the rower, bike, ski-erg, sleds and treadmill, all in one class,” Mr. King says.
If you’re someone who loathes cardio, try dancing, Ms. Sweeney suggests.
Resolution #5: Better Flexibility and Range of Motion
Our bodies tend to feel stiffer as we age, but there are ways to combat it.
If you’ve tried yoga and it isn’t for you, check out mobility classes that use self-massage tools like foam rollers. These classes can teach you techniques you can then use at home with equipment like lacrosse balls and massage guns.
“Being stretched by someone else feels way different than trying to stretch on your own,” Mr. King says.
