Man Utd now 'speaking' to £375k-a-week star as 'real priority' at Old Trafford – GIVEMESPORT

Manchester United are looking to get goalkeeper David de Gea to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford as a priority over signing another stopper for Erik ten Hag’s squad, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested to GiveMeSport.
The 32-year-old has entered the last six months of his £375k-per-week deal with the Red Devils, though the Premier League side do have the option of an additional year if required.
When speaking to the Manchester Evening News about a possible contract extension earlier this month, de Gea said: “Yeah, I’m very relaxed. Just focus on training, [and] perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”
However, according to The Sun, Everton and England’s Jordan Pickford is attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, having been embroiled in a dispute over his pay in contract negotiations at Goodison Park, suggesting that ten Hag could have set his sights on de Gea alternatives this month.
In December, Romano told GiveMeSport that the Red Devils were hoping to agree on a new deal for the former Atlético Madrid stopper if he was willing to take a pay cut.
And the journalist still believes that this is the priority at Old Trafford, despite rumours of interest in Pickford.
When asked about United being one of the sides interested in a move for Pickford, Romano told GiveMeSport: “For Man United, they are speaking to David de Gea to extend his contract on different terms. This is why I think de Gea is the real priority for Man United.”
Since signing for Manchester United in a deal worth £18.9m back in 2011, de Gea has been a colossus as the side’s last line of defence for over a decade.
The 45-cap Spain international has kept 12 clean sheets in 24 appearances this season alone, including a mesmerising performance in a 1-0 victory over West Ham United in October, which led to Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel dubbing the Madrid-born stopper as “unbelievable.”
The United number one has been a saviour for ten Hag’s side on many an occasion in the Premier League this season, having made 2.8 saves per game, stopping 48 shots in total, as per Sofascore.
Therefore, it’s no wonder that the Old Trafford outfit are focused on extending de Gea’s stay at the club and with both parties looking to reach a successful conclusion to negotiations, this is a deal that should get wrapped up by the time the goalkeeper’s current deal in Manchester comes to an end this summer.
