Casemiro and Varane helped steady United throughout the game, but at 1-0 down, it was going to take something special from the attackers to haul the Red Devils back into it.
The substitution to bring on Alejandro Garnacho proved to be a turning point, he managed to get in behind the City defence time and time again.
Garnacho didn’t try to do too much either, taking his time to play his teammates in, and this resulted in a perfectly hit low cross for Marcus Rashford to hit a first-time winner.
The youngster sent a message out on Instagram after the win, and was hailed by Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr, who left a ‘shooting star emoji’ in response to his post, indicating he was impressed with the youngster’s performance.
This followed Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard hailing Raphael Varane’s performance in the 2-1 win.
Garnacho made a little bit of history with his contribution. He is the youngest player to assist a goal in the Manchester derby, at just 18-years-old.
It’s clear United have a special talent, the work Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff are doing is already paying off, he looks a lot more composed than he did a year ago in the academy, while still possessing fantastic acceleration, an eye for goal, and an ability to simply ‘make things happen’.
He looks set to become one of the game’s big stars, and Manchester United are lucky to have him.
