The Mexico boys grinded toward an eighth-place finish in St. Charles last week.
The Bulldogs competed Friday and Saturday at the St. Charles Invitational, ultimately taking eighth place out of 27 schools. Grant Van Horn led the team with his first-place finish at 144 pounds, and Grant Walker was fourth in the 190-pound weight class.
Van Horn had two pinfalls and a major decision victory prior to ending his day undefeated with a 11-5 decision against Ste. Genevieve’s Evan Winters.
Walker was 3-2 after his initial bye, and his path run was not an easy one. He won a 3-1 decision against Poplar Bluff’s Bryce Dobbs, and then won via sudden victory before winning his consolation semifinal match 5-2 against Fulton’s Aidan Haglund. Walker was pinned in the third period by Parkway North’s Tyler Jones.
Keegan Koons, Evan Wilson and Watson Azdell each finished the tournament with a pair of victories.
Bowen, Johns win titles at Chillicothe for Mexico girls
The Mexico girls came away with a couple champions for the second straight week.
After coming away with a pair of first-place finishers in the Capital City tournament, the Lady Bulldogs had two win individual titles Saturday at the Chillicothe Hornets Girls Tournament. Abby Bowen and Alexus Johns won the 125-pound and 235-pound weight classes, respectively, for Mexico while Karisa Hayden was second at 170 pounds.
Bowen was a perfect 4-0 on the day as she won via pinfall twice — including against teammate Emileigh Woods — and won via 3-2 decision over Marceline’s Aislinn Schick and an 8-1 ruling against Southern Boone’s Zafaran Satterfield.
Johns received a couple of byes before pinning Macon’s Brooklyn Gooding in the third period.
Hayden pinned her first Gallatin opponent, Morgan Parker, before being pinned by the second Gallatin grappler, Abigail Parker.
Canonico leads Missouri Military Academy at Owensville Invitational
Gabe Canonico was one of several Colonels to finish Saturday with two victories.
Missouri Military Academy had multiple wrestlers finish higher on the podium at the Owensville Invitational, including Canonico’s second-place finish in the 165-pound weight class after pinning two opponents — including teammate Blake Krull.
Matthew Pfeifer, Brett Miles and Bryson Powell each took third place at the 106, 157 and 144 classes, respectively. Pfeifer won by pin and a 10-4 decision against Central Park Hills’ William Nick, and Miles won via medical forfeit in his final match but had a pinfall over Owensville’s Timothy Winterbauer in his first match of the day. Powell ended his day positively with a pinfall against Sullivan’s Draysen Nolie.
Sam Stevens used a pair of pins to finish fourth in the 126-pound weight class.
