At 13 years old Erik ten Hag may have had a bit more hair, but he was just as confident in his ability to be a football manager as he is now.
That’s what resurfaced footage suggests, anyway, as it turns out the Manchester United boss once appeared on a show and gave Dutch icon Johan Cruyff a few pointers on how to manage.
Cruyff asked the boys if a coach had ever yelled at them in training
Ten Hag then goes into a monologue about his thoughts on how to coach youngsters
Ten Hag wasn’t afraid to give Cruyff his point of view
In the early 1980s, three-time Ballon d’Or winner Cruyff – who played and managed Ajax and Barcelona during his glittering career – had a show called ‘Cruyff and Co’.
And when Red Devils boss Ten Hag appeared on it as a teenager with his Twente academy teammates, even at 13 he wasn’t afraid to tell his compatriot his views on how to manage.
Footage shows Cruyff quizzing the youngsters – who all donned some dodgy looking 80s hairstyles and outfits – on whether they get yelled at by their coaches.
And despite sitting further away from Cruyff than his other teammates, Ten Hag had no problem in being the one to answer his country’s icon’s query.
“I think you should watch out that you don’t yell at the youth too much, because you can break a player like that,” he said.
“But on a higher level, such as the first team of Ajax, you should be able to say something about it.
Ten Hag has clearly had a knack for management from a young age
“Those guys train almost every day in the week.
“If they keep making the same mistakes, you should be able to confront them.”
To which Cruyff responded: “So that means you differentiate between youth and paid football?”
And Ten Hag simply replied: “Yes.”
Of course, little did Cruyff know Ten Hag was to one day take charge at Ajax and win three Eredivisie titles, two Dutch Cups and one Dutch Super Cup.
In another conversation, the Red Devils boss also asked his hero: “What is the best way to develop your technique?”
Cruyff replied: “Developing your technique is really quite simple. You have to do it: train, train, train.
“That is the only thing that you have to do above anything else.”
Ten Hag’s managerial skills helped his side beat rivals Manchester City on Saturday, and the Red Devils boss will be hoping he can outsmart Crystal Palace this Wednesday, too.
