Josko Gvardiol lit up the footballing world and sparked interest from clubs across the world, including Real Madrid, with his run at the FIFA World Cup.
As a regular starter for the Croatian International team in Qatar, he single-handedly held the side’s defence on numerous occasions and was one of the biggest reasons for their third-place finish.
Real Madrid did not take long to jump into the race to sign him, but it soon became increasingly clear that the move would be complicated. Gvardiol was said to be happy at RB Leipzig and wished to continue at the club beyond the summer.
According to reports from Fabrizio Romano via Wettfreunde, the race to sign the centre-back has once again opened. Real Madrid will have to battle it out against Chelsea and Manchester City for his signature, with both Premier League sides seriously interested.
Earlier this month, the youngster issued an official update about his future and said that he would stay in Germany for the foreseeable future.
“My plan is that I stay here. I think everyone has seen Max Eberl’s statement. I’m okay with that,” he had said.
While a move in January is ruled out, Los Blancos will certainly look to push the limit and sign him in June. Given that David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are both crossing 30 years of age, a young centre-back to start alongside Eder Militao, in the long run, could be a smart addition.
In 13 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig this season, the 20-year-old defender has overseen one clean sheet and averages over five defensive actions per game.
In the World Cup, Gvardiol recorded a whopping ten defensive actions per ninety minutes and helped Croatia to two clean sheets in six games.

A recent report from The Athletic has offered an update on the future of Ivan Fresneda. The Real Valladolid youngster has emerged as a sought-after prospect in the market this January, with a host of top clubs across Europe tracking his progress.
Real Madrid are among the clubs keeping close tabs on Fresneda. The reigning European champions recognise the young player’s potential and could make a move in the near future.
A native of Madrid, Fresneda was formerly a part of the Real Madrid youth academy, before he eventually joined the Valladolid youth setup in 2020. Since then, the youngster has gone on to become one of the most talented right-backs in Spain, notably enjoying his professional breakthrough this season.
The right-back has featured in nine league matches for Real Valladolid this season, impressing the onlookers with his athleticism and work ethic out wide.
The report from The Athletic state that Real Madrid are among the clubs monitoring the progress of Fresneda. But they are set to face stiff competition from clubs such as Arsenal, Newcastle United, and even Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund scouts are expected to be in attendance when Real Valladolid take on Atletico Madrid this weekend. Other clubs interested in the services of the 18-year-old include Juventus as well.
Real Madrid are yet to make any concrete attempts to sign Fresneda. But the player could be available in this ongoing January transfer window if any interested party is willing to fork out a figure of around €15 million.
While the player is very much in demand, it remains to be seen whether Real Madrid or any other club are willing to splash the cash to sign the youngster in January, rather than waiting out until the end of the season.
