The Depp-Beck album: what you need to know
in reference to this latest article about Depp and English guitarist Jeff Beck, their album of mostly covers will be released soon, after taking the stage together in those shows that unsurprisingly made headlines.
Titled “18,” the 13-track album will be released on July 15. The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor has performed alongside Beck at several UK venues over the past two weeks.
“It’s almost like you went through a record store and jumped from one genre to another,” Beck said, stating that they started working on the album at Depp’s in France.
“There’s a couple Motown covers, there’s a couple Beach Boy covers… Sounds pretty good for a home recording.” Depp and Beck have been recording music since 2019 for the album, which also features two original songs by Depp, who has his own band, the Hollywood Vampires. A song is about actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr.
“We slowly built songs that we love. We didn’t really design,” Beck said.
“He has…a very distinctive (voice) and he gets music and I hope I’ve allowed him to open up to songs that he wouldn’t otherwise be interested in.”
Following the verdict earlier this month, Depp said the jury returned his life.
Beck said: “I hope I helped him a bit to have some kind of understanding and closeness and a joke, and to keep having fun.”
Beck was speaking on the sidelines of a blue plaque event honoring the late guitarist Jimi Hendrix at the London Hard Rock Hotel. The building was formerly the Cumberland Hotel, where Hendrix often resided before his death in 1970.
“It was one of the biggest voids left in rock ‘n’ roll,” Beck said.
