“Animals has always held a special place in the hearts of Floyd fans,” Povey said. Program. “Perhaps because it was the antithesis of anything that had come before it. A hard rock – almost punk rock – Floyd album. An album that contains arguably some of Gilmour’s best guitar work and the lyrics most Waters sharpest.
“The shows that supported the album are legendary – spectacular theatrical presentations that, to the chagrin of the band, have never been filmed for posterity. Audience recordings of these shows are some of the most beloved in fan collections. and represent some of the best- So the release of a 5.1 box set this year with the option, finally, of a professionally mixed live performance that had been hanging under fans’ noses for years was tantalizing to say the least.
“I wrote this book with the intention that it would be a companion volume to the promised release of the 45th anniversary edition of the album and I have scoured my mountainous archives and, with new research material, I have produced a comprehensive book of the period which I hope will be a valuable addition to the library of knowledgeable Floyd fans.”
The spectacular tour, which took place during the first half of 1977, ended with personal problems for the band members, eventually leading to splits between the bands and growing intolerance and disdain for Roger Waters towards fan adulation, culminating in the incident at the Montreal tour’s final show of Waters spitting at a fan, which became the keystone of his vision of isolation and madness that ultimately led to the creation of The wall two years later.
