NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon is speaking out following the announcement of Kyler Murray’s ‘homework’ contract clause.
The Cardinals had a homework clause in Murray’s blockbuster contract extension, requiring four hours of independent study per week for the star quarterback.
Arizona’s odd contract clause drew a lot of criticism and was later removed.
Moon thinks it was a slap in the face for black quarterbacks everywhere.
“It’s something we were always accused of back when they wouldn’t let us play,” Moon said. “That we were lazy, that we didn’t study, that we couldn’t be leaders, that we weren’t smart. So all of these different things kind of came up after we put all of this to bed over the years and just because of this deal between Arizona and Kyler.
Moon isn’t sure Murray will ever get over this.
“The damage has been done,” Moon said. “He’ll have this problem every time he does something wrong in a football game. They’ll say, ‘See, that’s the reason it happened, it’s because he doesn’t ‘didn’t study enough film last week’, or whatever. . . . It’s a very unfortunate situation for him and very embarrassing for both parties.
Not everyone agrees with Moon. After all, the Cardinals put that clause in Murray’s contract for a reason.
However, even quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes think black quarterbacks are treated differently.
Murray, meanwhile, is moving forward after speaking to the media earlier this week.
