Peter Schmeichel has named the four teams that can win the Premier League this term and issued a warning to Erik ten Hag as he enters his first season as a Manchester United manager.

Manchester City won their fourth title in five years last season, finishing one point above Liverpool after a thrilling battle.

City and Liverpool have moved well away from their domestic rivals, but Schmeichel – who won five league titles at Old Trafford – said the 2022-23 campaign would not be an “easy sail” for the sides of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

The Premier League legend believes Chelsea and Tottenham can fight for the title and says that “for the first time in a long time” Arsenal are in the top four.

Schmeichel is less optimistic about his former club Manchester United, insisting they face a “long transition process” following Ten Hag’s arrival.

“It won’t be as easy for Manchester City and Liverpool as people think.” For both, it will be a very different season,’ Schmeichel told The Times.

“A massive transition, in terms of style of play, is taking place at City. Look at the Pep Guardiola transfer deals: signing Erling Haaland and letting Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus go.

“It shows you how determined he is to play with a No.9 and we’ve never seen that with Pep before.”

‘How is this going to play out? How long will it take in bed? Will Haaland be as good in the Premier League as in Germany? I am not sure. Will he score 25 goals? Yes, if the team serves it. But City aren’t used to playing that way.

“Liverpool is also changing. They signed Darwin Nunez but lost Sadio Mane. Will Nunez be as good as Mane? I wonder.

“Competition will come from Chelsea and Spurs, who have signed well and Antonio Conte has a very smart manager who is so good at getting the most out of his players.

“I’m also watching Arsenal and for the first time in a long time I’m thinking ‘top four’.

‘Manchester United? The pre-season has been promising, but the reality is that a long transition process is necessary.

“The club supported Erik ten Hag in signing players he knows and wants to work with, and his first season will be fascinating.”

The 2022-23 Premier League season begins on Friday night with Crystal Palace hosting Arsenal.
