Did you hear the thunder Monday night, Sacramento?

Rain, lightning and thunder spread across most of the capital region, said National Weather Service meteorologist Hannah Chandler-Cooley.

Residents were quick to post snippets of Sacramento’s rare weather event on the r/Sacramento Reddit forum.

A Reddit user posted a 15-second video of rain showers in downtown Sacramento. The post had 946 upvotes and nearly 80 comments.

Another Reddit user posted a four-second clip of a lightning strike in West Sacramento, warning people to stay safe. The post had 60 “upvotes” and five comments.

Lightning also struck Sunday night, knocking out a traffic light in East Sacramento, city officials said.

Those who missed a glimpse of Sacramento’s unusual weather will have to wait until the next storm to see a light show.

Chandler-Cooley said while rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit Sacramento after 11 a.m. Tuesday through Wednesday, the chances of seeing more lightning are unlikely.

There is a 15% chance of thunderstorms and a 40% chance of rain Tuesday in the Sacramento area. The chance of rain on Wednesday climbs to 50%, according to the National Weather Service.

“Anything forming in the Valley today,” Chandler-Cooley said, “will be much more isolated and dispersed.”

Humidity and fog

Some areas received scattered fog on Tuesday, a holdover from the moisture and humidity brought by the storm.

“When we have enough wet ground and it’s really wet,” Chandler-Cooley said, “it can cause fog, especially at night and early in the morning.”

Humidity levels in the Capital Region typically range between 20% and 30% on a typical summer day in Sacramento. The region’s most recent weather event pushed humidity levels well above 80%.
