Trey Mullinax wins 2022 Barbasol Championship, earns British Open spot

Low scores set up for a close shave in the final round of the 2022 Barbasol Championship, with the tournament decided with a late putt.

Trey Mullinax made a 14-footer for a birdie on the final hole to take a one-shot lead to 25 under and earn not just his first PGA Tour victory, but the last berth on the court for the 150th game of the next week of the Open Championship in Saint André. The 30-year-old shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday to trail rounds 65-65-67 and hold off a charge from Kevin Streelman, who missed his birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff.

“I had a reminder this week that this was my goal. This is what God has for me,” Mullinax told the Golf Channel after his round. ‘That’s your goal. It’s what you’re supposed to do, so commit and do it.

Mark Hubbard was third at 22 under, followed by Hurly Long at 21 under. Vince Whaley rounded out the top five at under 20.

In addition to his appointment with the Old Course, Mullinax is also exempt until the end of the 2023-24 PGA Tour season. After next week’s major, there are only six events left on the Tour schedule for the season.
